October 23rd, 2020 (SIJHSAA State Meet @DuQuoin) - As our season has come to a close, I wanted to share out final information about the State Meet and tie up any loose ends.
On Friday, we ended our season at the SIJHSAA state meet in a bit of a wild fashion. The week leading up brought us more rain that we've seen in the last 2 months and Friday was no exception. When we got to DuQuoin it was nearly 80 degrees, but within the hour the weather had changed drastically, and teams were forced to board their buses as a thunderstorm rolled through. A serious downpour on an already soft saturated ground, made the course very interesting (and challenging) for our runners. Add to that, the temps dropped to the low 50's and the winds were howling! Easily, the most challenging conditions of the season. Fortunately, the rain rolled through and we were able to get races started with a short delay.
The ladies got us started. The format for the races was much different than usual where our teams of 7 were divided into two separate races and the results were combined to tally team scores and individual places. After the dust settled, our ladies came out on TOP! The girls team is your 2020 SIJHSAA State Champions! The ladies were led by their fearless, consistent and strong group of three 8th graders as they have all year. Cameron Crump (2nd place runner-up!), Ava Rau (7th), Kamryn Rader (10th) were followed by Macy Jones (29th), Norah Kettler (37th), Morgan Springer (39th), and Calla Espenschied (61st). This is the 3rd year in a row the girls have won this state meet, which makes our 8th graders spoiled! Congratulations to all the girls on our team this year as these accomplishments belong to everyone. Top to bottom, every runner is important and contributes to the team success.
Our boys ran in the later part of the day as conditions got colder and more windy. The boys had a very realistic goal of finishing in the top 4 and winning a trophy but they didn't quite reach that on Friday. Our young group of boys finished 7th overall at the SIJHSAA state meet and walked away with their heads up, excited for "next year". While they didn't have the day they were hoping for, there were a lot of gutsy performances from the boys side and lots to be proud of. The boys were once again led by Trent Glaenzer (30th) and Wyatt Nolte (31st). Following them, our lone 8th grader Luke Warden (43rd), Zach Bonenberger (50th), Cole Ludwig (56th), Jeremy Warden (61st), and Tyler DeVilder (63rd). While I will miss all of our 8th graders, I am excited to see what this boys team can do next year with a little more strength and experience. Congratulations to the boys on a great season!
Below, I've attached all the details from the day for your browsing needs. There are overall individual results, team results, my compilation of the team results, etc.

Thank you everyone! Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns and I hope to see you all on the track in the Spring.
- First, anyone who still has a uniform please turn it in (CLEAN & DRY) to the main office at WJHS in a bag with your name on it.
- Second, I have to extend a huge thank you to all of you, parents! You are the reason this season was possible. I say this all the time, but good parents are the reason we have such good kids. So, thank you all for encouraging your runner to come out for the team this year. This is the largest group I've had in a few years and I loved every second of it. Thank you for being flexible with me as I navigated a season that I never believed would happen in the first place (and I'm a positive person!). Thank you for not getting (audibly) frustrated with me as I made adjustments on the fly on a daily basis as this season brought new challenges and decisions that I have never had to face before. Thank you for keeping your kids/family safe through all of this so that our team could continue to meet, practice, race. Thank you for doing all the not so small things like sweaty clothes laundry, feeding your extra hungry runner, reading my exhausting emails, helping your child remember their hectic practice schedule, and giving me a few words of encouragement along the way. This is not enough of a thank you for all that you've done, but it hopefully encapsulates how grateful I am for your support. THANK YOU!

October 15th, 2020 (SIJHSAA Regional Meet @Waterloo) - Last night we hosted our Regional XC Meet. This was the first of its kind. Before this year there had never been an SIJHSAA Regional meet. In years past, all participating schools attended the state meet resulting in several hundred runners on one starting line and 30 or so teams competing. The idea of trimming down the size of the race by instituting a Regional qualifier had been discussed in the past, so this year they decided to give it a trial run given all the restrictions in place with respect to group gatherings. All that to say, we have never done this before!
By default, the kids had the opportunity to "make history" and that's just what they did! The girls and boys both left the night as Regional Champions automatically punching their ticket to the state meet next week! The girls led us off in dominating fashion. Cameron Crump continues to lead our girls group as the individual Regional Champion. Kamryn Rader is our runner-up, Ava Rau 3rd, Macy Jones 4th, Calla Espenschied 5th, Morgan Springer 12th, Norah Kettler 13th. Our 1-5 finish gave the girls a perfect score! Congratulations ladies!
The boys knew it would be a close race to come away as champions and they executed perfectly. They edged Millstadt out for top honors by 4 points. Trent Glaenzer had a great race and is our Regional individual Runner-up! Wyatt Nolte and Cole Ludwig demanded respect for 6th graders around the world as they took 5th and 6th place, respectively. Zach Bonenberger and Luke Warden rounded out our top 5 scorers snagging the last two medals in 9th and 10th place, respectively. Jeremy Warden and Tyler Devilder finished in 12th and 13th, respectively. Congratulations gentlemen!

Exciting night! I'm very happy that we get to take both full teams to the state meet next week. I'll be sharing all the nitty gritty details about that early next week.
Last, but certainly not least, THANK YOU to all those that volunteered to help this event run so smoothly. WCUSD5 Maintenance Staff, Dr. Schwartz, Mr. Unger, Coach Huffman, WHS XC Athletes, and many of you parents came out to help in any way possible. Not only was it appreciated, but you are the reason this went off without a hitch. Our starter complimented how well things went and I have you all to thank for that.

October 1st, 2020 (Waterloo IntraSquad) - Attached are the results from yesterday's 1.86 mile (adjusted course) intrasquad race. Let me know if you have any questions! I didn't intend for this to be a super serious race with hardcore results, but I did want the kids to have another chance to run fast and competitively. I also believe that if I'm going to ask the kids to put down a hard effort, I should track it for them.

September 23rd, 2020 (Home vs. Red Bud) - We had a great day at home yesterday afternoon as we hosted Red Bud. I'll start by thanking my parent volunteers as I had such great help! I had several volunteers on the course supervising a distant corner and 3 different road intersections. I had multiple volunteers helping me screen kids as they arrived and another volunteer set up my finish chute before I could get to it. Thanks to Mr. Unger for helping with supervision and Coach Huffman for helping at the finish line.
Our ladies had a great night as they took the top 12 spots consecutively. The girls were led by Cameron Crump as they blazed the course besting the field by over a minute! The girls have been looking very strong with a deep squad all year long. The top 5 pack of Crump, Rader, Rau, Jones, and Espenschied have been leading the way. I encourage everyone to use the ONGOING results to track their improvement from 9/3 to 9/23 races since we ran the same course. My math says the least amount of time a girl cut off was 1-minute and biggest improvement was 6-minutes!! Way to go ladies!
Our boys had their best race of the season so far. Trent Glaenzer continues to pave the way and 6th grade, Wyatt Nolte earned his first runner-up place in a race. With a Red Bud runner taking 3rd, the Bulldogs filled in from there. L. Warden (4th), Ludwig (5th), J. Warden (6th), Theobald (7th), and Schimpf (8th). The boys took their first "W" of the season with a solid performance all around. The boys improved each anywhere from 1-minute to as much as an 8-minute improvement from the meet on 9/3!

September 16th, 2020 (Away @ Freeburg) - Wednesday night we travelled to Freeburg for another successful race for the kids. The girls were led once again, by Cameron Crump who was the race champion. Kamryn Rader, Ava Rau, Macy Jones, Calla Espenschied, and Ryleigh Smith took spots 2-6 in the race! Norah Kettler rounded out our top 7 with an 8th place overall finish. While official results and team scores were not recorded, the girls had a perfect score of 15 points!
The boys were led once again, by Trent Glaenzer who was the race champion! Trent battled the entire race with a kid from Freeburg, but ultimately put down a strong finish to separate himself from the competition. Sixth grade standout, Wyatt Nolte was our 2nd finisher once again. Luke Warden, Zach Bonenberger, Garrett Schimpf, Jeremy Warden, Tyler DeVilder rounded out our top 7. While official results and team scores were not recorded, the boys were not able to top the tough Freeburg boys squad even though they ran well.
Below I've shared two sets of Results that I have created for your viewing convenience. The ONGOING results are pretty detailed. There are several tabs that you can click through with information about the season. The POSTED results are the same information, but organized in a much cleaner, straightforward way. Results are sorted from top to bottom, first finisher to last finisher. Again, click through the tabs at your convenience.
I will continue to update these documents throughout the year and share them out as I do. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

September 9th, 2020 (Waterloo Home vs. Smithton) - Attached are a copy of the results from last night's meet at home! Thanks to all who came out and supported! Special shout out to the parents that volunteered at an intersection and the finish line. Things went smoothly and it was much appreciated! If you missed the chance to help and would like to in the future, we have a couple more home meets where that will be available. Thanks for Mrs. Schwehr and Mrs. Rau for helping screen kids while I finished setting up the course.
Girls got us started with a dominating performance led by 8th grade Cameron Crump who took the individual crown for the girls race! Cameron was followed by teammates Kamryn Rader (2nd), Ava Rau (3rd). A batch of seventh graders rounded out the team top 7 with Macy Jones (5th), Calla Espenschied (6th), Megan Young (10th), and Ella Brown (11th). The girls team won the meet with a total of 17 points to Smithton's 42 points. Remember the lowest score wins!
Boys, also had a great first race of the season. While they lost a close one with Smithton who edged them out by 5 points, they had a good showing. The boys were led by 7th grader Trent Glanezer (overall runner-up) and 6th grade Wyatt Nolte (3rd) who is bursting on to the scene with authority. The boys top 7 were rounded out with Jeremy Warden (6th), Zach Bonenberger (9th), Luke Warden (10th), Tyler Devilder (11th), and Garrett Schimpf (12th).
I plan to compile these results into "Team only" results for ease of viewing and tracking for the season. When I have more time I'll get that finished and sent out to everyone! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. There will be NO PRACTICE MONDAY for the Labor Day Holiday. Workouts for the weekend are below.
This workout should be done on 2 of the 3 days off this weekend.
25-30 minutes easy paced running

August 19th, 2020 - FIRST DAY OF JUNIOR HIGH CROSS COUNTRY PRACTICE will be from 3:15 - 4:45 after the first day of school on Wednesday. Runners will need to dropped off in the WJHS circle drive by 3:15. Runners can be picked up in the parking lot behind the gym or at the circle drive after practice. Practice will be every day after school for the duration of the season. See you all then!
August 17th, 2020 Announcement:
Hello Cross Country Parents!
You are receiving this email, because you filled out my survey (google form) expressing interest for your son/daughter in running WJHS cross country this season. I'm using the email addresses shared through that form.
If you signed up yet, don't forget to sign up for the Remind Notifications from me. This will be extremely important for me to use this year, so please sign up. If your runner has a phone that can sign up, have them do it as well. Instructions attached here:
2020 XC Remind Invite.pdf
Practice will begin Wednesday, August 19th. An updated physical (within the last year) MUST be on file at the JH in order to practice. If you are uncertain of your student's physical status, contact the JH main office to check. Practice will be daily from 3:15-4:45 (Monday-Friday). In addition to an updated physical your runner MUST show up to practice with their own water bottle and mask. When I screen your child as they arrive to practice I'll be checking for those two items. They will be sent home if their temperature is above 100.4, if they are experiencing any symptoms or if they show up without a water bottle or mask. As mentioned before, I plan to use an alternating day schedule for practice after our first day together on the 19th.
FOR EXAMPLE: A typical week would have Girls practicing Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and boys practicing Tuesday, Thursday. The following week we would switch that schedule with boys going 3 days and the girls going 2 days. The kids will still be expected to run on the days they aren't attending practice. I will prescribe their workout/run.
Runners will need to dropped off in the WJHS circle drive by 3:15. Runners can be picked up in the parking lot behind the gym or at the circle drive after practice at 4:45.
Here is a tentative practice/meet calendar. As i update this I'll be sure to let you know, but this will give you an idea for now.t
XC Season Calendar
Please review the SIJHSAA return to play guidelines which closely follow the IHSA guidelines. They are thorough and detailed.
Cross Country Return to Play Guidelines for 2020
Attached below is the tentative meet schedule for this year. It is different from your typical season. We have less competitions, smaller races, less teams, and will be racing at home more than usual. Last I've heard, there will not be a state series (per the guidelines), but I suppose there is a chance that can change. This is less than ideal, to say the least, but it is better than the alternative. I'm happy we get to practice and compete, even if it's at a fraction of what we are used to.
JH Cross Country - 2020
I am working on updating my website, so check there for any previous communication shared that you may have missed.

I apologize for the delay in reaching out to you all, but it's been a bit of uncertain times lately with regards to the Fall athletic season. I don't have a lot of concrete information to share at the moment, but I wanted to get a few details out.
First, please share this information with anyone you think may want to know. I don't know who will be interested from the incoming 6th grade class, so it's hard to reach those families. If you know of anyone please forward this on to them.
- First day of practice will be the first day of school, August 19th, 2020. Practice will be held daily during the school week (Monday-Friday) from 3:15-4:45.
- As always, anyone hoping to participate MUST have an updated (within the last year) physical on file with WJHS. The remaining forms and athletic fee will be handed out on the first day.
- I encourage everyone to get familiar with the most updated information being released by the SIJHSAA and IHSA which I have linked below. These are the guidelines in which our sports season is having to operate within. Adherence to these guidelines is 100% mandatory. If anyone thinks they or their child cannot adhere to these guidelines I encourage you to contact me so we can evaluate whether or not this season will be a possibility for your student-athlete.
- Go ahead and add to your equipment list (if you haven't already) a personal water bottle and a mask for cross country practice/meets. There will be no public access to water nor a water jug to use so a personal water bottle is required. While we will be spending the duration of our practices outdoors we won't always be able to stay 6 feet apart so a mask is required to attend practice. If a student-athlete shows up without a mask they will be sent home. Runners will be instructed to wear their masks at all times, unless instructed otherwise. My personal goal is to have them worn for the beginning and end of practice activities, but let them take them off during the majority of the running time. The runners will be expected to carry their mask with them at all times. It can be worn around their neck or put in their pocket.
- While WCUSD5 is learning remotely, it will be my responsibility to screen student-athletes as they arrive for practice. This requires a temperature check and a series of questions that are documented. As you can imagine, 50+ kids and 1 coach doing this is not ideal. For this reason and several others, prepare yourself for the possibility that I may be implementing an every other day practice schedule in which half the team practices every other day. For example, Girls practice M, W, F and Boys practice Tues, Thurs with the groups switching the following week. This would allow a more realistic amount of time being spent on the screenings, more room to spread out for the kids, and less contact amongst runners in general. Keep in mind with a schedule like this, the runners would have to be doing running, strength and agility work on their own on the days they are "off" from practice for this model to work and for them to be successful for the season.
- Finally, as we get closer to the start of the season, please keep your ears open for updates. This is extremely fluid and things could change daily. I will do my best to stay in touch. I've created a Remind classroom for you all to join to stay as updated as possible. Again feel free to share this with anyone interested. Instructions on how to join are attached here:
2020 XC Remind Invite.pdf - If you have any questions please email me back as I'm sure there are things I have forgotten to address. Thanks for your time and support! Stay healthy!
