October 19th, 2019 (State Meet) - I wanted to send out some final information regarding the end of the season, including results from our SIJHSAA state meet on Saturday in DuQuoin.
Uniform turn-in will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) during the 9th hour study hall at the junior high in the cafeteria. I will have pizza for the kids so that we can collect uniforms and celebrate the end of another great season. Please help your athlete have a clean AND dry uniform ready to be turned in tomorrow. Thank you in advance.
We finished the season on a high note at the state meet Saturday! The boys & girls were both able to come away with a team award which is always great to do on both sides! The girls led the way dominating as they have all year long taking the State Championship title for the 2nd year in a row! And as far as I can tell from the records that are kept on the SIJHSAA website their score of 30 is the lowest point total ever scored at the state meet for girls. To offer some perspective, they beat the 2nd place team by 122 points. Awesome job, ladies! As they had been all season, the girls were led by Ali Kloeppel and Angelynn Kanyuck who finished 1-2 in every race this season with the Saturday being no exception. Ali defended her individual state championship in addition the team title and Angelynn moved up from her 3rd place performance as a 7th grader to runner-up this year! Seventh grader Cameron Crump, once again, battled with a runner from Carriel and finished 4th overall by a tenth of a second! Fellow 7th graders Ava Rau and Kamryn Rader also had great races finishing 11th & 12th, respectively. Chloe Aubuschon & Chloe Wagenknecht capped off great seasons in 41st and 80th, respectively. What a great season for the girls. I know our 7th graders and some up and coming 6th graders are excited for next season already!
The boys came into the day with a game plan and they executed it perfectly! We knew coming into the day that our best tool against the competition would be their ability to pack it up as a group. The boys knew that if they ran together they could push each other to be better than if they ran individually. That's exactly what they did. We talk a lot about the 1-5 and 1-7 split with the kids throughout the season and how you always want to work to get that number as low as possible. Typically, if your 1-5 split is under a minute you're doing pretty good. The boys 1-5 split on Saturday was under 13 seconds. They're 1-7 split was 29 seconds. That is extremely low and very impressive! That is the main reason your boys came away with a 3rd place team trophy out of 33 teams! Our top 5 boys all earned medals with our 6 & 7 boys just barely missing a medal by a few seconds. Way to go boys!
I am insanely proud of both boys and girls teams. They worked hard all year long and they performed when it mattered most. For your reference, there are loads of full results attached below.
Last but not least, THANK YOU PARENTS! This season does not happen without all of you being the engines of support. I say this every year, but I am so lucky to work with such great kids with such supportive families. A large part of the success is due to the parental involvement so bravo to you all! I very much appreciated the thoughtful card and Nike gift card. It is FAR TOO MUCH and unnecessary, but very much appreciated.

October 15th, 2019 (Highland Invite) - MEET CANCELLED. As you know, we held a scrimmage like race today on our home course after our meet was cancelled in Highland. I used it as a Time Trial. Kids ran great and seemed to enjoy the unique experience. Results are attached below!

October 10th, 2019 (Triad Jamboree) - Triad was our first wet conditions, but we came away successfully! Bulldogs took 1st place in both the Red Race and White Race giving us 1st place award for the combined score as well! Lots of great races and tough competitors. Our White Race had the heaviest rain, but our open runners had the muddiest and wettest course to run on. Everyone stayed tough as usual.
I've attached info and results for the meet from Thursday at Triad. The full race results are linked below and then both of my POSTED and ONGOING results are below that.

October 5th, 2019 (DuQoin Invitational/Pre-State) - The Bulldogs had a great day on Saturday in DuQuoin!
The varsity boys led off the morning with their best team performance of the season. They were led, once again, by Ethan Schimpf (11th). The boys kept a tight pack having only 48 seconds from Ethan to Trent Glaenzer (our number 5 scorer) and just over 1:00 through our 7th runner. That's very good and a big reason why the boys pulled off 3rd place out of 29 teams. The True Grit award goes to Zach Bonenberger for finishing the race with only 1 shoe on! The Mr. Nice Guy award goes to Luke Warden who finished the race with 3 shoes because he picked up Zach's shoe after he lost it and finished the race carrying it. Wild times in cross country!
The varsity girls used the momentum from the boys and continued their dominating season without skipping a beat. I knew the girls would be the favorites to win the meet, but didn't expect them to go as low point wise as they did. With 200 girls in the race, the girls went 1-2-4-7-10-(25)-(28) to score only 23 points and take the team title! The second place team had 118 points to give you some reference. Having our 5 scorers in the top 10 and all 7 girls in the top 30 is fantastic. The girls were, once again, led by the 1-2 punch of Ali Koeppel and Angelynn Kanyuck. Our 7th grade trio of Cameron Crump, Kamryn Rader, and Ava Rau continue to run tough rounding out our top 5. Chloe Wagenknecht and Chloe Aubuschon made it easy on me cheering by working together most of the race and battling it out with a small pack of their own. The girls ran very well on paper and in person. My True Grit award goes to Cameron Crump who ran the race in 3rd the majority of the way. When a girl from Carriel with a speedy kick challenged Cameron with 400 meters to go, Cameron fought right back. When it would have been easier to let that girl go right by, Cameron hung with her until the very end fighting every step of the way. While Cameron eventually finished 4th, she represented exactly what it means to never give up!
The open race was just as impressive as the varsity races. Our boys were led by Mitch Baldwin (4th) and Dylan Brewer (5th). Also snagging top 15 medals in the race were Brendan McClory (8th), Jeremy Warden (12th), and Ian Scherle (13th). Our girls were led by Ella Brown (3rd) who was the front of a pack of 8 girls who finished in the top 14 spots!! Macy Jones (4th), Khloey Ade (5th), Calla Espenschied (6th), Nadia Franks (7th), Amelia Stellhorn (11th), Norah Kettler (12th), Lauren Patterson (14th). Way to go everyone!
As always, I've updated the POSTED & ONGOING Results at the top of the page!

October 1st, 2019 (Waterloo Home Meet) - Thank you all so much for coming out to support the WJHS XC team on Tuesday night at our home meet. I felt that things went well despite the heat, and the hundreds of people in attendance. Thank you all so much for the support and those that volunteered to help along the course. Thank you to Coach Huffman and Mrs. Huffman and the high school XC kids that helped out at the finish line.
The girls finally got their perfect score (15) Tuesday night and took 1st out of 8 scoring teams. They have been close a couple times, so it was exciting for them to reach that goal. Ali, Angelynn, Cameron, Kamryn, Ava went 1-5, Chloe was 14th, and Calla was 22nd. Way to go ladies! Lots of great runs from the open, but Chloe Aubuschon was the first female open finisher and snuck in with the 6th fastest time on the team for the day.
The boys ran well and took 3rd out of 10 teams with 65 points. A couple of the boys had some health issues which negatively impacted their race, but that happens sometimes! Nevertheless, the other boys stepped up and they still ran well. Eli Schwehr (6th) led the way with what I thought was his best race of the year. Justin Witt keeps improving as he took 8th place. Our 6th grade due Zach Bonenberger and Trent Glaenzer continue to push each other taking 18th and 19th, respectively. Luke Warden rounded out our top 5 with a 24th place finish as he continues to improve as well.
Attached are the full Home Meet Results which include all competitors in the two varsity races.

September 24th, 2019 (Edwardsville Invitational) - I have updated the POSTED & ONGOING results as usual. Additionally, I've attached the OFFICIAL results from the TRXC timing website. Not sure how long those results will stay on their website so I saved them. These results will contain all finishers for every race in addition to team scores, etc. Check them out at your convenience.
Boys had a good night taking 5th out of 19 teams. Ethan Shimpf led the way for the boys finishing 9th overall and Eli Schwehr continues to be our number two boy finish 26th overall. The rest of the boys had very strong runs in tough competition. They are making great progress!
BOYS RESULTS
Girls had another impressive showing taking 1st out of 16 teams. Their score of 23 was especially impressive given the size of the field Our girls went 1-2-4-7-9-37-47 with our top 5 scorers being in the top 9 overall finishers. Pretty awesome. It is safe to say the orange jerseys have painted a big red target on their backs! The girls continue to be led by Ali Kloeppel (1) and Angelynn Kanyuck (2). It sends a message when two teammates lead the race each time out. These two are great leaders and a big factor for why this team does so well. The rest of the girls are following their lead! Cameron Crump (4th), Kamryn Rader (7th) and Ava Rau (9th) have also continued their impressive runs so far this season rounding out our top 5 in incredible fashion each time out. These three 7th graders are a force!
GIRLS RESULTS
The open race had a ton of great performances in the super crowded field. Over 460 kids were on the starting line of the open race which makes it much more difficult than the start of a varsity race that had about 1/4 - 1/3 that many kids on the start. On the boys side, the Warden boys were battling until the very end as they finished 9th (Luke) and 10th (Jeremy) overall out of 280 boys. Grant Eugea (14th) and Brendan McClory (23rd) had solid runs as well. On the girls side, Chloe Wagenknecht (1st) and Calla Espenschied (2nd) led the way finishing just a few seconds apart and topping the 180 person field. Sixth grader, Ella Brown has a breakthrough performance of the season and finishes 6th place in the race putting her 8th overall on the girls squad. Other notable finishes in the girls open were Nadia Franks (12th), Lauren Patterson (22nd), and Amelia Stellhorn (27th).
OPEN RESULTS
Next week (Tuesday, October 1st) we are hosting our only home meet of the season. More information to come on that!

September 19th, 2019 (O'Fallon Carriel) - It was another brutally hot evening that the kids endured and really showed some grit! The boys had a strong showing tying for 3rd place out of 7 teams. They tied Collinsville with 79 points, Alton had 78 (2nd) and Carriel had 48 (1st). They are on the edge of a breakthrough, I can feel it. Boys were led by Ethan Schimpf (4th) and Eli Schwehr (9th) for the 3rd time this year. Once again, our 6th graders Zach Bonenberger and Trent Glaenzer finished in the top 5 contributing big time. Lots of great performances from the boys open race, highlighted by Dylan Brewer and Brendan McClory leading the way in the top couple spots!
The Girls had another dominating performance matching their very low score from last week of 17 points. The girls finished 1-2-3-5-6-11-12. They finished 1st out of 7 teams as they continue the season undefeated. Our top 5 runners of Ali Kloeppel, Angelynn Kanyuck, Cameron Crump, Kamryn Rader, and Ava Rau have consistently finished in those positions for the 3rd time this year. Calla Espenschied and Chloe Wagenknecht continue to run strong as well keeping us very competitive. It's not surprise as strong as the varsity squad is that our girls also perform well in the open race. Chloe Aubuschon and Macy Jones were the top 2 female finishers in the open race and managed to sneak into the top 7 finishers for the girls squad. Macy Jones had an especially big breakout race for herself as the 6th grader announced her presence!
Great running by a tough group! Let's hope for some cooler temps moving forward.

September 12th, 2019 (Alton Invite) - It was an extremely hot and humid day, but the kids didn't let it shake them. In general times were a little slower than usual for all competitors, but I think our kids mental toughness shined through. The boys were very competitive ending 4th out of 15 teams and really not far from 2nd place. Ethan Schimpf led the way with a strong 6th place as an individual. We had some 6th grade boys Zach Bonenberger (3rd on the team) and Trent Glaenzer (tied for 5th on the team from the open race) making some noise in the top 7!
The girls had one of the best performances I've had as a coach. The lowest possible score is 15 points and our varsity girls scored 17, nearly a perfect score. Our varsity girls went 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 19, 29. Awesome. Ali Kloeppel and Angelynn Kanyuck led the way as usual, but 7th grader Cameron Crump wanted a piece of the action taking 3rd overall. Kamryn Rader and Ava Rau battled hard with the only runner not from Waterloo (Triad) before finishing in 5th and 6th, respectively. In the girls open, Calla Espenschied (6th grade) was the first overall female finisher and snagged the 7th overall fastest time for the girls team!
Lots of great performances all around!

September 10th, 2019 (O'Fallon Fulton) - Yesterday's meet at O'Fallon was a big success! We came away with a 1st or 2nd place plaque in all 4 of the scored races! Despite the heat/humidity and the last minute course changes our kids had a great 1st meet of the season! Our JV boys led the way with a 1st place plaque and several boys earning top 15 medals. Our JV girls followed with a 2nd place plaque and several girls earning the top 15 medals. Our Varsity girls took hold of their race winning a 1st place plaque and having a super low score of 22 points. Almost every girl earned a medal in that race. Our Varsity boys were tied for 2nd place, but won the tiebreaker to take sole possession of 2nd. The boys had an impressively tight pack that had only 50 seconds separating number 1 and number 7.
Most of our meets won't produce "official" results so I always work hard to collect all the times so I can make my own results. I will share them after every meet. They will be shared in two formats. The POSTED results are straightforward top to bottom results that list the kids in order of their finish time regardless of which race they ran. I post these lists after every meet in the gym in addition to sending them out. The ONGOING results link has all the kids tracked results for the entire year. You can see where your child is placing on the team in every meet throughout the year in addition to viewing team results, etc. There are a lot of tabs, so I encourage you to click through and check it out. As the year progresses it'll be interesting to see. Be mindful that each meet may have a different race distance. Yesterday, we ran 1.2 miles. Most meets will run either 1.8 or 1.86 or 2.0 miles. It will always be good to know that when comparing your time from race to race.
