October 13th, 2018 (State Meet) - Congratulations and thank you are in order to everyone for a great season that ended with a great state meet this weekend.
The ladies started us off yesterday morning with an awesome performance. Ali Kloeppel, once again, led the way winning the race as she has done all year long. Ali has won every single race she's competed in this season and this was no different. She won the race by over 40 seconds and set the course/meet record in the process. Angelynn, also had an outstanding performance trying to get that runner-up spot before narrowly missing it and placing 3rd by 1 second. Great race and season for her as well. The Kamryn/Cameron 6th grade duo continued their very impressive first year of running as well taking 10th and 11th place, respectively to set themselves up for a successful Junior High running career! Molly and Chloe weren't far behind taking 18th and 22nd, while Emily took 42nd and insured that our entire girls squad earned state medals! I'm not sure I've ever had a team do that before. This was good enough for 43 points and a huge 1st place finish as a team. Your 2018 girls SIJHSAA XC State Champions! While I am sad to see out 8th graders finish their final season of XC, I am excited as 5 of our top 7 runners will be returning next year.
The boys went into the day with big goals of securing a spot near the top and hoping to bring home a team trophy as well. Joe led our boys as he has all year battling in a very close race at the front with a few other boys before finishing 3rd overall just 8 second behind 1st and 1 second behind 2nd. Congratulations to him on a great JH career! Morgan continued his successful season taking 12th place overall. Morgan has grown a lot this year and I hope to see him join Joe on the high school team. Ethan was next in 29th place and while it wasn't what he was hoping for, he had a great season and I'm excited to see him back next year. Matthew had a solid race taking 48th and securing a state medal too. Justin finished off his first year of running taking 74th and improving a lot over the year. Ben and Eli rounded out our varsity finishers. Both had an off day, but that happens in this sport and I know they will learn from the experience and be better for it in the future. Although the whole team would have liked to had a better day, they still finished 6th place out of 29 teams which is nothing to be ashamed about. I am extremely proud of both the boys and girls teams, the entire team.

I want to thank everyone for such a great season! Success and enjoyment in this sport doesn't happen without hard work and lots of support from parents. My job as a coach is impossible without the help of great parents so thank you all. Also, thank you so much for the incredibly thoughtful and unexpected gifts and card I received yesterday. They will all be put to good use and I am incredibly humbled.

October 4th, 2018 (Triad Jamboree) - Below are the OFFICIAL meet results that Triad sent over to me. Our last regular season competition is on Tuesday at Highland where everyone will be competing as usual. After Tuesday, I'll only need my top 10 boys and top 10 girls (7 varsity and 3 alternates) to finish out the week practicing and ready to race at state on Saturday in Benton. I'll be sharing that information out Tuesday evening after Highland. Everyone else will be done for the season. I'll have a uniform collection date the following week after state that I'll share later as well. With 4 days off, encourage your runner to run 2-3 of those 4 days off.
The kids ran well in this fun co-ed varsity race format! We took 1st place in the Red race, 2nd place in the White race, and 1st place OVERALL! There were lots of great performances in the varsity and open races. Great job runners.

September 29th, 2018 (Benton Invitational/Pre-State) - This Saturday our teams woke up early and took the long trip to Benton City Park for our largest, most competitive race of the year! There were 27 teams in attendance and the weather was perfect for running.
The varsity boys started us off this time and they did so with a strong team performance. After the dust settled, our boys were 3rd/22 teams. They finished close behind a tight packed Olney (2nd) and a very tough group from Marion (1st). The boys were once again led by Joe Schwartz who took 3rd place overall. Morgan Stratton continues to improve has finished in the top 10 with a 7th place medal. Ethan Schimpf (19th), Matthew Hunter (42), Eli Schwehr (43), Justin Witt (55), and Ben Murphy (56) rounded out the boys strong 114 point total.
The varsity girls followed the boys with a performance that was just plain fun to watch. The girls continued their undefeated season with the best performance all year long taking 1st place of 21 teams scoring an unreal 24 points. Ali Kloeppel ran away from the field also continuing her undefeated season with a 1st place finish. Angelynn Kanyuck overtook a runner from Carriel to finish 2nd place overall and go 1-2 with Ali! It wasn't long after that a pack of 3 followed. Kamryn Rader (6th), Cameron Crump (7th), and Chloe Wagenknecht (8th) ran incredibly well as a group the whole race to put our top 5 scorers in the first 8 places, wow! Emily Biffar (27th) and Lucy Weber (44th) rounded out the successful day for the ladies!
Our open race was well represented by the Waterloo boys & girls, too! Grant Eugea had a breakout race and led the way for the Bulldogs. He was just seconds away from breaking into the top 7 and he looked stronger than anyone around him in the last few hundred meters of the race. Dylan, Max and Landon also ran strong. Molly Grohmann also had a great race as the 2nd overall female finisher in the open race and running a time good enough for 6th on the team! Chloe A, Nadia, Cailee, Sam, Josie, Ava, and Amelia all ran strong races finishing within 20 seconds of each other.

On Thursday of this week, we are heading to Triad. Triad's meet is bit different as they use a fun co-ed varsity format. The information is attached below. Essentially, they have a red race and a white race instead of a boys and a girls race. Each race is co-ed and the points are tabulated per race then combined for an overall winner. It's a fun, different format that the kids seem to enjoy.

September 25th, 2018 (Waterloo Home Meet) - Tuesday night's home meet went off with great success and a special thank you to everyone who came out to help volunteer and cheer on all the runners! THANK YOU!!
After a short, but intense downpour of rain, the skies opened up to sunshine which made our day much warmer and humid as ever. Add the slow, soggy course conditions and the kids were in for a challenging race day. As usual, our kids were up to the challenge! We had almost 160 runners in the girls race, and a little over 180 runners in the boys race.
The girls scored a season low 23 points which was good enough for 1st place and continued their undefeated streak. Ali Kloeppel also continued her undefeated streak taking top honors individually. Angelynn Kanyuck (3rd), Kamryn Rader (4th), Chloe Wagenknecht (7th), Cameron Crump (8th), Emily Biffar (17th), and Lucy Weber (19th) rounded out our top 7 finishers. Taking 5 of the top 8 spots and getting all 7 inside the top 20 is pretty awesome when you're talking about that many runners. Way to go ladies! "Official" results below.

The boys also snuck away with 1st place against a competitive field by scoring 57 points and beating out Alton who had 62. Every point and place is showing to be significant for the boys this year and they are having to earn every bit of it. The boys were led by Joe Schwartz who also took 1st place individually! Morgan Stratton (8th), Ethan Schimpf (10th), Eli Schwehr (17th), Matthew Hunter (21st), Justin Witt (25th), and Ben Murphy (47th) rounded out our top 7 boys. Our boys squad has been successful all year, but I am loving the improvements they make from meet to meet. "Official" Boys results below.

September 18th, 2018 (Edwardsville Invitational) - Last night we traveled the SIUE campus for the Lincoln Invitational. This is one of my favorite meets of the year because it's a big race, it's on a dedicated cross country course, and we compete against large competitive schools like Edwardsville Liberty & Lincoln. Several of these schools are much bigger than Waterloo and consistently talented teams. It was very hot and humid, a trend that just won't disappear even though we are over halfway through September!! Shout out to Mr. Kloeppel for lending his pop-up tent and putting it up unannounced before we even arrived to give the kids a break from the sun. Despite the tough weather conditions, our kids endured and came out successful!
The girls varsity race got us started and the girls wanted to continue on this seasons early success. Ali & Angelynn got out to the front early and never looked back. Kamryn, Chloe, Cameron, Emily, and Lucy got out a little slower than we had planned at the beginning leaving themselves some work to do in the 2nd half of the race. Ali never looked back running away with the race winning by nearly 30 seconds and continuing her undefeated season. Angelynn had a very strong 3rd place finish behind a strong Edwardsville runner. The rest of the group made invaluable ground on their competitors in the 2nd half of the race. Kamryn Rader finished 10th, Chloe Wagenknecht 18th, Cameron Crump 23rd, Emily Biffar 33rd, and Lucy Weber 46th. As a team they scored 55 points good enough for 1st place out of 18 teams!

The boys varsity race had a similar feel. We made some goals as a team knowing that they were achievable, but not easy by any means. Joe Schwartz led the way by jumping out front to duel with his common competitor from Collinsville from the very beginning. While the rest of the boys made a slight improvement to start a little more aggressively they were well behind in the first half of the race from where they had planned. This left them a lot of work in the 2nd half of the race. Joe exchanged the lead with the kid from Collinsville several times and it came down to a very close finish with Joe taking 2nd place by 1 second. It's always exciting to see these two kids take an race that lasts 11 minutes and have it tight all the way to the finish. This is some of the best racing I've ever seen at the JH level. Almost every other boy had a great 2nd half moving up many places. Morgan Stratton led that charge working all the way up to 6th place overall! Ethan Schimpf took 25th, Eli Schwehr 36th, Matthew Hunter 48th, Eric Holman 51st, and Justin Witt 58th. With the level of competition present last night, I'll admit I wasn't very optimistic, but the boys gritty finishes earned them 1st place out of the 18 teams there! It just goes to show why it's important not to ever give up on a race even if it isn't your best day. The boys and I have had a couple conversations about adjustments that need to be made between now and the end of the season and we are not there yet, but I am confident we will be. The boys totaled 117 points and walked away champions for the night!
EdwardsvilleBoysScores.JPG
EdwardsvilleBoysPlaque.JPG
In the open race, we saw some extreme domination from our girls and tough races from everyone. Ben Murphy led the charge for the boys and snagged a 15th place medal in the open race! Close behind him were Grant Eugea and Dylan Brewer. Sam Lindhorst led the girls squad with a 5th place medal and a time that was 7th fastest for ALL girls that day. We had girls in orange taking 8 of the medals between 5th and 15th place! After Sam, was Josie Briggs 8th, Cailee Mudd, Ava Rau, Amelia Stellhorn (somewhere between 9th-12th, they left before I could see their medals), Nadia Franks 13th, Katelyn Hodge 14th, and Larkin Nottmeier 15th (who ran the 2nd half of the race with only 1 shoe!). There were several other great performances as well, nice work everyone!
My usual POSTED & ONGOING results are updated and shared below for your viewing pleasure!

September 13th, 2018 (O'Fallon Carriel) - Here's some results from the meet last night at O'Fallon Fulton as well as some information for our meet next Tuesday at Edwardsville (SIUE).
Last night was a larger group of teams at Fulton than last week, but it brought some familiarity as the kids were able to try and improve their times from the same course. Across the board, runners had a great afternoon. I've attached teams scores and my un-patented POSTED & ONGOING results pages below. The girls were led, once again, by Ali Kloeppel who ran away with the race taking top honors. Angelynn Kanyuck battled hard and finished 3rd overall. The rest of the girls followed suit with our top 5 finishing in the top 11 spots and all 7 of our girls finishing in the top 20 of a 100 person race. Not surprisingly, they took 1st place as a team out of 13 teams with a low 33 points. Way to go ladies! They are not making it easy on any other team. In the open race, 6th grade Cameron Crump had a great race and made a very strong case for why she should be running varsity. Lucy Weber, Sam Lindhorst, and Katelyn Hodge also had strong performances!
Girls varsity:
1. Waterloo (33)
2. Fulton (106)
3. Carriel (126)
4. St. Clare (134)

10. Collinsville (251)
11. Wesclin (281)
12. Good Shepherd Collinsville (288)
13. Trinity (337)
The boys were also, once again, led by Joe Schwartz who earned some redemption beating an early season rival and taking top honors in the race! A slow start from the rest of the varsity squad made it a game of catch up for the boys. Morgan & Ethan were able to work their way up and into the top 10 while our next 4 finished between 26th and 60th place. Although the boys ran tough scoring 81 points, they were bested by Collinsville who had 56 points. I do believe our boys team is good enough to win this meet and they are better than what they showed that day, but we will learn from this race and adjust accordingly. The boys were 2nd out of 15 teams. In the open race, Justin Witt ran very well earning a spot on varsity for next week and Dylan Brewer continues to contend!

September 6th, 2018 (Alton Invite) - Our trip to Alton was not nearly as wet as promised, but we did show up to an unannounced new course layout from previous years so that made it just as exciting. The extreme humidity and the new course layout didn't shake our kids though as every one of them ran tough for their longest distance of the year so far (2 miles). In my opinion, this is the toughest course of year with the high number of hills with steep grades added to the fact that it is early in the season. As I said, our kids didn't let it prevent them from having great races.
Our girls varsity started the day with Ali Kloeppel leading the way to an individual victory winning the race by a WIDE margin. Congratulations to her! The rest of the girls followed suit as Angelynn Kanyuck (4th), Kamryn Rader (6th), Chloe Wagenknecht (18th) and Emily Biffar (19) rounded out our top 5 scorers and Cameron Crump (47th) & Molly Grohmann (50th) had our entire team in the top 50 runners! It should be no surprise that the girls team walked away with top honors taking home the 1st place trophy out of 18 teams!
Our boys varsity team took that momentum and kept it rolling. Joe Schwartz battled the entire race with another boy from Collinsville never getting more than a couple steps from one another as they traded the lead several times throughout the race before finishing in 2nd place just a couple steps behind him. It was a hard fought race that will probably continue all season long between those two and I am excited to see it play out! The rest of the boys had their own battles with Ethan Schimpf (11th), Morgan Stratton (13th), Eli Schwehr (25th), Matthew Hunter (27th) rounding out our top 5 scorers and Ben Murphy (57th) & Dylan Brewer (65th). The boys wound up taking 2nd place out of 19 teams missing 1st place by a mere 2 points to Triad middle school. It's always tough to lose by such a small margin, but it's a great lesson to learn at this stage in the season as we talk about how every point matters!
Our Open races were LARGE and exciting! The runners in the open didn't let the chaos of a last minute combined race distract or overwhelm them. They went out and competed very well in a race that was double to triple the size of the varsity races which adds the difficulty of navigating large groups of runners to the mix. The majority if not all of the kids in the open race were making a large race distance jump from the 1.2 miles they raced on Tuesday, but they all powered through that extra .8 of a mile. We even had a couple girls sneak into the top 7!
Way to go everyone! We are back at O'Fallon Fulton next Thursday. The course is the same, but the format is a bit different. There will be a girls varsity at 4:15, a boys varsity at 4:45, and another staggered (by 1-minute) combine open boys and girls race at 5:15. All 3 races will be running the same 1.8 mile distance this time. I'll send out race rosters early next week.
Updated above are the POSTED & ONGOING results that I will continue to send out after every meet. A quick disclaimer: I gathered all these times for the kids myself. I have not yet received "official" results from Alton coaches and I'm not sure if I will. I try very hard to make sure my timing is accurate and it most always is. I did miss 1 varsity girls time, but I have a general idea of what it was and will fill that in once I hear back from the Alton coaches. Sorry for that!

September 4th, 2018 (O'Fallon Fulton) - Last night we traveled to O'Fallon Fulton for the first time ever and we had a great showing! There were 6 races and we did well in each of them. The JV girls kicked things off with an impressively low scores of 28 points which earned them 1st place as a team. The JV boys followed it up with a strong 2nd place as a team. Our Varsity girls kept the theme going and went very low with 31 points and a 1st place team finish. Our Varsity boys also fought hard to take a first place award as a team. Our open runners collected their own share of individual medals across their two races as well. At the end of the day we took home lots of individual medals to kids earning top 10 finishes, 4 plaques from each of the varsity/jv races and one BIG plaque as the overall combined score meet champions!
There were lots of great individual performances that added up to a great team performance. In case you didn't notice, the JV and Open races were 1.2 miles in distance, while the Varsity races were 1.8 miles in distance. This makes the time comparisons a little more difficult, unfortunately. Linked up at the top of this page are the two forms of meet results that I track all year long. The first one (POSTED) is straight forward top to bottom fastest time to slowest. You'll find other bits of results stats in there too that you can check out. I share these with the team. The other set of results (ONGOING) are more for tracking results in one place for the entire season for comparison purposes. If you click through the tabs you can look at meets individually or you can look at one athlete for the entire season to quickly see how they and their teammates have been doing as the year progresses. Feel free to check them out and let me know if you have any questions. Since this first meet had varying race distances the best way was to rank order the varsity results (marked with a "V" and in red) then the rest of the 1.2 mile results from the JV and open races. Hopefully it's not too confusing. Future races shouldn't be so complicated as we typically all run the same distance regardless of which race we are entered.
