October 19th, 2013 - State Meet - Benton:
Let me start by thanking all of you (parents) for your support this season. I mean it quite literally, when I say that our season is not possible without your hard work and support. My job as a coach is made very easy because my runners have such supportive parents that are willing to drive, clean, feed, remind, encourage and cheer for their children over and over and over again. So, THANK YOU, for all that you have done and continue to do for your children and for me. It is very much appreciated.
Although we experienced chilly, wet, and muddy conditions on Saturday our kids came focused with a goal in mind. They sure did not disappoint. The girls started the morning off with some great races. Jenna Schwartz and Allie Tuttle led our young girls team with 7th and 8th place finishes, respectively. As our top 5 finished in the top 50 finishers we were able to snag an impressive, trophy worthy 4th place as a team!! Congratulations to this young group of girls who look to be extremely tough next year.
Our boys took the girls' strong race as motivation and continued the morning of success. The Eli's led the way for our group. Dodd and Ward finished 8th and 10th, respectively. The rest of our top 5 finished in the top 30 and our top 7 finished in the top 50. There was 32 seconds separating our top 5 runners and only 54 seconds separating our top 7. This is an extremely impressive statistic and our boys team has run like this all year long. If you don't believe me, then come by the school to check out the Boys' 1ST PLACE TROPHY! It was a close race, but our boys edged out the competition to bring the state title home to Waterloo! Congratulations to this solid group of boys.

I've already received some pictures that I have forwarded out, but if anyone else has pictures they'd like to share or have me post to the website, feel free to send them to me.
This week or next, I will be having a uniform turn-in/pizza party at school during study hall. At this time, I will have pizza and soda for the kids and their admission to the party will be a clean jersey and clean shorts. I will send out a date for that on Monday (8/21). Please help your runner remember to bring their uniform then, so I can collect them all at once.
Finally, I have sent out a brief email about the opportunity to get some things printed on the back of tshirts. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. For now, I'm going to say that we will only be offering "State Champs" and "4th in State". If anyone is interested in having names or individual places, etc. printed I will forward contact information for the person doing our printing so you can contact them individually. I'm sure they'd be happy to work something out for anyone interested.
Thank you, again, for a great season!!

October 19th, 2013 - State Meet - Benton:
Information for the upcoming State Meet CLICK HERE.
I want to get the State Meet rosters out to everyone as soon as possible. I have listed the varsity rosters (7 runners) as well as 3 alternates for the girls and boys teams. The 7 varsity should plan to run at the state meet and the 3 alternates are asked to continue practicing this week, and travel to the state meet as if they may run. Alternates are needed in case a runner gets sick/hurt/etc. any time between now and the start of the race. Alternates will warm up with the varsity runners before the race and if they are not needed they will support their team mates to the best of their ability during the race.
I'd like to take a moment to remind parents and runners that an extreme amount of thought goes into every one of my decisions, especially this last one. It is a tough decision that I try to make as easy as possible by using race times and finishes to guide me. I look at finishes and times from the entire season, especially recent performances. I also take into account a runners attendance, attitude, effort in races and practices. These things in addition to others are the drivers behind my decisions throughout the year and, especially now. I always invite parents and runners to come to me with questions, concerns or comments. I know that the way it works is not always fair to everyone, but I try to make the decisions that are both fair to each individual runner as well as the rest of the team. This includes making a roster that I believe has the greatest chance of success in addition to deserving the opportunity the most. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns.
Runners, who are not listed on the varsity or alternate roster are done for the year. These runners may begin practicing with other sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc.) immediately. However, any runner who wishes to finish out the week, may do so. I will have a uniform turn in date/pizza party next week for ALL runners. Lastly, any runner that would like to ride the bus to the state meet with us to cheer on their team mates is welcome to do so, as well. I ask that those runners please give me advanced notice.
Below is the roster in addition to extra information for this Saturday. Bus time and race times are the most important pieces of information. This race is in Benton at Benton City Park, exactly where Pre-State was.
Thank you!!

October 15th, 2013 - Highland Invitational - Highland:
What a night for the Bulldogs!!
I have to say I think this was the best overall meet for our team. Girls and boys ran great all around. There were some spectacular races and some gutsy performances. I'm extremely proud of the way a lot of our kids finished their season.
Our Girls team tied for first with Salem and took the 1st place trophy after the tie went to the finish of the 6th runner on our team (ours had theirs beat by 9 places!). Our boys took first by 8 points beating a Fulton team that crushed us at the Benton Invite. There were some great races all around, but I am mostly impressed with how well the boys and girls teams ran TOGETHER! Keep up the good work!! I've attached my custom results excel sheets. You'll notice that the Girls Varsity times are paired with an asterisk (*) because their race was adapted due to course conditions, which made it slightly shorter than the boys varsity and open race. I'll be sure to upload official results when I receive them from Highland.
Thanks for a fantastic season for those of you who are finished after tonight and I hope to see everyone back next year!

October 5th, 2013 - Pre-State Meet - Benton:
Information about the Pre-State Meet.
Official Results from Pre-State are located HERE.
Attached are MY results for the meet this Saturday in Benton. I emailed out the link for the official results from the meet, but if you wanted to see a consolidated set of just Waterloo kids these will be helpful. The POSTED results show them by meet in finishing order (no matter what race they ran).
I forwarded a couple pictures Dawn Ivers sent me on Saturday, so hopefully everyone got them (hope you don't mind Dawn!). If you have any that you'd like me to have/share feel free to send them my way. I will post these pictures here, as well.
I was quite proud of the boys and girls teams this weekend. We went to the biggest meet of the year besides state and represented extremely well! Both teams walked away with trophies in the top 3. While there is still room for improvement these last two weeks, I am excited for our teams potential at the end of the season.
This week, we travel to Triad High School for the Triad Jamboree. This race is unique because they run two varsity races that are both co-ed instead of a boys and girls only race. So, I will be dividing each squad into equal varsity rosters and racing them in the red and white races. There will be an open race after, as usual. That will also be co-ed, as usual. I've attached a flier for the race on Thursday and meet directions can be found at my site.
I believe sweatshirts are coming in today, so I will pass those out before practice, today or tomorrow.
Let's finish these last 2 weeks strong!

September 26th, 2013 - Home Meet - Waterloo:
"Bulldogs Dominate Dual Meet" is what the headline would read...
Tonight, at our home meet, the Bulldogs represented the "home turf" with domination as Smithton visited us. The girls team started off the night taking 1-4, 6, 8, and 9 place for our top seven individuals. They missed a perfect score by 1 point totaling 16 as a team. The ladies were led by 7th grade Jenna Schwartz and Allie Tuttle, respectively. Despite a nagging knee injury, Jenna was able to develop a large lead and win the race by 30+ seconds, grabbing the first race victory of her running career. Congratulations, Jenna and the rest of the Girls!
The boys team had a similar story as the first 16 finishers of the race were wearing Waterloo uniforms!!! The boys continued their season of running close together and flooded the finish line with black and white. This gave the boys a perfect score of 15, which is the true sign of dominance. The boys were led by a tough looking, 8th grade Jackson Ivers. This is Jackson's first overall win in a race and first time finishing first for the Bulldogs. Way to go Jackson and the rest of the boys!!
As usual, I have attached the POSTED results for last night and past meets. If you continue to scroll down on the results from last night, you will see results from previous races.
We will have a little break from races until NEXT weekend, Saturday, Oct. 5th at the Pre-State Meet in Benton. I have to submit rosters for that race by tomorrow, but everyone will travel to that race, whether they are running varsity or open.
I'd like to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who helped out at the meet!! Thank you to all the parents who came to WJHS and shuttled runners to the High School. Thank you to all the parents that showed up to the meet to support their runner as well as help work the race. Thank you to Coach Huffman, Coach Mattis, and Dan Classen for helping set up and run the finish line/timing. Thank you to the high school cross country runners that helped out with the finish and timing too. This meet would not have been possible without all of you. Thank you for everything!
REMINDER: Anyone, wanting to order a sweatshirt needs to place their order no later than 3:00 tomorrow (Friday). I'm sending out the order right before practice. Money can be turned in through next week if you'd like. Adult XS - 2XL are the sizes available and the price is $32.

September 25th, 2013 - UPCOMING HOME MEET INFORMATION: Our home meet is scheduled for this Thursday, Sept. 26th. There will be 2 races. Girls race is at 4:00 and Boys race will go at 4:30. As of now, Smithton is the only meet schedule to race with us. Others may show up if we get them committed in the next day or two. Our home meet is run out on the Waterloo HS campus. The finish line/chute is located behind the home stands of the football field.
I have already asked for any parents who can help transport runners to the high school from the junior high and here is who I have scheduled to do that:
Cathy Ward (3 Wards plus 3 more)
Julie Goulding (6 runners)
Mary Ann Kreinberg (3-4 runners)
Tom Sliment (6 runners)
Dawn Ivers (4 runners)
Jane Lunk (2 Lunks plus 4 more) - if needed...
Ling Zhang (Carrie plus 5 more)
I have already asked for any parents who can help direct runners on the course during the races and here is who I have scheduled to do that (please meet at the finish line behind the football stands):
Mr. Arterburn
Judee & Tom Sliment
Amber & Eric Lavender
Stephanie Hicks
Amy Ingram
Please let me know if you are on this list and should not be or if you are NOT on this list and would like to be. As of now, we are about a car or two short of having all our kids transported in one trip. I can take a group if we need to or one of our parents driving can maybe take a 2nd trip if we have to. REMINDER: All kids must be picked up from the high school Thursday night after the meet just like they normally would after practice. There will be no transportation for them after the meet. I guess the meet will end around 5:15. Feel free to pick them up at the high school football field then.
Thank you!!

September 24th, 2013 - Edwardsville Lincoln Invitational: Our Girls JV ran well, as we put two 6th graders in the top 15, but didn't have enough runners to post a team score. Our Boys JV team caught two in the top 15 as well, and brought home a 2nd place plaque as a team. Our Girls Varsity, put up a respectable 5th place overall as a team with two of our girls cracking the top 10 individually (Jenna Schwartz & Allie Tuttle). Our Boys Varsity finished 4th place overall, while 6th grader Eli Ward led the team in 13th place with an impressive 11:43 on the tough 2 mile course. I'm not sure how many teams were there for each group, so we'll have to wait until I receive results for that information.
Official results should arrive via email to me this week and I will post those when I receive them. For now, I am posting the results I have recorded for our team, which includes times, race finish, and team finish. Feel free to check them out below and previous races also if you scroll down far enough.
Again, feel free to send any pictures of our team and I'll try to get them on the website.

September 20th, 2013 - NO PRACTICE! 1/2 DAY OF SCHOOL.
September 19th, 2013 - O'Fallon Invitational:
What a hot/humd/crazy evening in O'Fallon!! First, let me apologize to everyone for the confusion with the number of races and who was racing when. Originally there were supposed to be 3 races, (2 varsity, and an open). Because of the looming weather, they decided to just have a girls race and a boys race. I didn't realize this until very very late for our girls. As a result, a handful of our girls had to race with little to no warm-up/stretch and even worse form some. This was very unfortunate and I apologize for the hectic situation. However, our girls were able to run tough and perform well. I apologize to any parents who may have missed their child's race as a result, too. I work hard to make sure everyone is informed and this was something I did not foresee. I'll be sure to do better in the future.
Both teams had some great individual races. I think each team also has some improvement to come. I am excited about what these two teams are capable of doing this year. Both, our girls and boys teams took 2nd last night out of 5 teams. Our girls were beat by O'Fallon Carriel and our boys were bested by O'Fallon Fulton. Both teams, we see A LOT this year. Let's keep our heads up and chase those teams the rest of the year. We CAN beat both of these teams. I believe our teams could have both finished 1st.
I've attached the POSTED results for last night's meet. This document has the posted results for each meet (runners are in their finishing order). The results for last night are the first set, with past meets following. So, you can see last night's results as well as Alton's results if you scroll down far enough. I will continue to post in this fashion after meets, with the most recent meet at the top.
REMINDER: There is no practice Friday, because of the half day. We practice Monday, and then go to SIUE for the Edwardsville meet on Tuesday. This meet will have Varsity, JV, and Open races. I will send out information on that meet later. Our home meet is on Thursday and, soon, I will be asking for any parents who may want to stand on the course to direct runners or help in other ways.
Continue to check out the website for updates as I add results, pictures, etc.
Feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, and comments.
Thanks!!

Continue to check out the website for updates as I add results, pictures, etc.
Feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, and comments.
Thanks!!

September 12th, 2013 - Alton Invitational:
I'm still waiting on official results from the folks in Alton, but I was able to get most of them myself at the meet, so here they are!
First, I wanted to thank all the parents for all the work we've done up to this point! None of this season would be possible without the parent support, so thank you all! Second, let me apologize to a few of you that received the wrong shirt size. I got everyone except 2 kids corrected before the meet last night. Sorry, again. Also, I want to apologize for the directions I supplied. Apparently they took you to the part of the park that was across the street from where the meet was being held. I'll try to double check them from now on.
We had a GREAT first meet from our kids last night. I was a little nervous with the first meet being cancelled but our kids did fantastic. Usually that first meet is smaller, easier and a good warm up for our runners because Alton is much bigger and tougher. Our kids dominated the course, though. Our boys were able to pack it up together and take 2nd place out of 13 teams. Our girls ran very well too, taking 3rd place out of 13 teams.
Our open runners also ran some great races after waiting around all evening for their turn to run. Most of them being first time runners, it was an impressive race. A lot of our open runners ran to what I would call a "varsity performance." With that being said, our varsity line ups will change a little for next weeks race at Carriel. Remember, those varsity rosters are never final. They can change each week.
I have attached an excel file that has the results from last night with the kids race finishes in order as well as their times.
If you have any pictures from the meet, feel free to send them on to me and I will try to get them on the website in addition to the results! I've attached some in a slide show that I have already received. Enjoy! Thanks everyone!
